History of Rotor Craft Flight

“Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the Earth with your eyes turned skyward. For there you have been and there you will always long to return.” --Leonardo da Vinci

The Helicopter has come a long way since Leonardo da Vinci’s first studies of mechanical flight. For all its apparent clumsiness and lack of obvious aerodynamics, the helicopter has become an invaluable tool in aviation, both for civilian and military use.

It was Igor Sikorsky’s dream of vertical flight that finally brought the helicopter to the forefront of American aviation technology.  After nearly 500 years of scientific development, he finally designed and built a successful vertically flying machine.

In the wake of Sikorsky’s innovation, progress came quickly. With the world’s military designers getting involved, the helicopter grew to the aircraft we know today. The many uses of the modern helicopter are well documented. From the battlefields of Korea and Vietnam, to the everyday uses for transportation and law enforcement, the helicopter continues to prove itself as one of the most valuable tools aviation has ever seen. From its humble beginnings as a dream by da Vinci, to Frank Robinson’s plans for an affordable piston helicopter available to anyone who wanted to fly, the helicopter has truly proven itself.

Wouldn’t you like to be a part of that dream?
